Events

Here you can find the regular events taking place in and around Reigate and Redhill. The best way to remain up to date is to sign up to our mailing list. We often plan things in short notice. We also communicate using the social media app “Telegram”, which works a bit like WhatsApp.

There are 5 types of usual events in XR:

Actions: Events directed at highlighting issues. They can include non-violent acts of civil disobedience and could take the shape of anything from a bike swarm to a bank protest or a die-in to a flash mob. Locally to Reigate, Redhill, Dorking and Gatwick Airport, we are also engaging in actions to publicize our concerns without causing disruption, such as through stalls, leafleting and performances.

Training: Learning opportunities, covering introductions to XR and its core principles and understanding of different roles to support actions. We also hold training in out meetings, as well as online using platforms such as Zoom.

Socials: We need times to regenerate our energies and get to know each other!

Non-XR events: We support events held by organisations with shared goals (e.g. Dorking Climate Emergency and UK Student Climate Network). Let us know if you want us to publicize an event.

Regular events

Climate Café: We meet once a month on a Wednesday (was Mondays) at 7.30pm at The Yard, at Reigate Station, 3A Holmesdale Rd, Reigate RH2 9QN.

We have some time initially to chat then have our group’s meeting to share information, for example about upcoming evens and feedback from the working groups. We sometimes have trainings at these meetings.

On other Wednesdays, we either meet on zoom or in Dorking.

Faith at the Gate: First Sunday of the month, 3.30pm, at Horse Hill Protection Camp, at the junction of Horse Hill and the A217, postcode RH6 0HU.

Horse Hill Rebel Alliance welcomes people of all faiths and none to join a peaceful candlelit vigil to shine a light on the climate crisis and the climate battleground at Horse Hill. Bring a tealight in a jar, a high viz jacket if you have one, a small prayer flag, and a torch. Afterwards, join us for a drink at The Black Horse Pub opposite the camp.

“Pause for the Planet” and “Come to the Table”  Join our public vigil on alternate Fridays in Dorking (usually on South Street opposite Waitrose) followed by an opportunity for table talks to discuss the way forward.

Monthly Banner Drop over M25 – We have huge banners that we suspend safely on the bridges over the M25. The action is co-ordinated with other XR groups in the SE on other motorways. To do this safely we need 3 rebels at put up and put down and 2 rebels the rest of the day, minding the banners. Please do sign up to the rota. It is a great way to get our message out to large numbers of people. And an opportunity to get to know each other a bit better.

Upcoming events

Walk the Shale Trail with us 1 October 2022

Meet: 11am at Horse Hill, RH2 8PP. Nearest rail stations are Redhill, Horley and Gatwick. Walkers can be collected from the station on the day.
✊ A walk between two shale oil extraction plants in Surrey (Horse Hill and Brockham), which the current operators are planning to expand. This walk has been planned to raise awareness of these sites and to connect with the local community.
🛤️ Walkers wishing to take part in the Just Stop Oil action in London will be taken from Brockham to Dorking Station in order to join other activists in Parliament Square, taking with us the story of local ongoing fossil fuel licensing in the Surrey Hills.
🎤 During the course of the day we hope to be able to link the walk with the action in London and highlight the proximity and urgency of stopping UK fossil fuel licensing.
🐐 Distance: 6.5 miles (10km) linear walk
